Betty asks…
Why do some apparenly intelligent rangers fans only see black and white?
Was reading an intresting football forum with people who preoprted to be rational rangers fans, but they seemed to have it ingrained in their head that Celtic is an Irish club and further more that its impossible for a celtic fan to a be a unionist with a big U in terms of the union between scotland, wales and england but republican with a very small r in terms of Northern Irelands position in the union.
The fact is forget about the morality or otherwise of NI being british but think only in finacial terms, what does their country offer the rest of the union? Scotland offers oil, england offers a population backbone and well wales offers fish (joke) but what does NI offer us finacially?
Apparently it is hypocritical (in a few nice but misguided peoples eyes) to be republican with a small r in that matter, but to ultimately be of the opinion that if the ulster people want to be part of our “gang” then they should. Financially I would rather they were not but its not the rest of the uk‘s choice to make, the other 60 million people must bow down to the will of the 2 million in Northern Ireland. And why can’t they accept that most celtic fans are very much scottish minded but also celebrate their links with ireland as their ancestors came from their.
America dosen’t ask people to forget their italian roots, an incidently one can be an italian american and still be very very patriotic to their nation thus one can be proud to be scots irish and also proud to be british too. I don’t get why some people can only think you have to be one or other. I guess then I should not like drama, sport and music as these things are also incompatible?
Yes the political nonsense is quite another thing but dont confuse those flying the tricolour as necessarly anti-British or for that matter supporters of the IRA, some might even be wholly against a united Ireland so please broaden your minds. I am of course directing this at the more reasoned rangers fans who seemed nice guys but a little confused at the possibility one could have more than one identity and that their is actually no contradiction in those beliefs if framed in the terms I use.
Yes there will be some people who are freverently in support of a united Ireland however that is a wholly different thing from those of us who retain a small Irish identity whilst being patriotic Brits. Think about it you don’t tell people from african decent that they cant be “British African” do you? Incidently in time people will wholly give up these labels and every one will just be British, perhaps as it should be, perhaps not, but one thing is for sure is their should not be people forcing people to give up a dual, tri or quad identity it should happen naturally. People should let go of their hang ups about particular sections of society concentrate on the politics if you must not the confused issue of national identity which is quite disperate from the issue of politics. Incidently I may celebrate the irish aspect of our club but I would not like to live in the south of ireland where you have a choice between two right wing parties or the north where you have a choice between the far right DUP or far right sien fien, not much of choice and celtic were the first British club to win the european cup so I think that proves we are British as does our signing of players like Ledley and Sutton over the years. I despair at snp voters, why destroy Britain?
Joy answers:
Well if you think Celtic fans holding the flag of Ireland are all in love with the Union i don’t think i have the will to give you an answer lol.
It seems to me you like Britain and you are in denial about what 59 500 people at Celtic Park actually think.
Don’t believe me? Try singing Rule Britannia in the Celtic section at a Rangers game.
