Your Questions About Fly Lures Fishing

Linda asks…

how do i retrieve the fly when fly fishing?

after you cast out the fly, i don’t understand if you retrieve it like a regular lure or if you let it sit out there until a fish hits it
im going for bass or other fish in south florida

Joy answers:

You let it sit for a while and float downstream. The line floats on the water as well as the fly. Fly fishing is only done in moving water, like a river. If you don’t get a bite, you retrieve when the line runs out and cast again to a different location. The key is the line and fly float downstream while the fish swim by. The fish are constantly swimming and only sit in one place for short periods of time before moving further upstream or downstream. The fish come to the fly. Either you get a strike in a few moments or not. The fish are a moving target, so if you don’t get a bite in one location, you shift to another location. Round and round it goes… By the way, you do NOT need any special gear or rod. The whole point is to let the fly drift on top of the water so the fish will strike from below thinking it is food. You only use a rod so you can direct the fly to a specific location where you think fish may congregate, such as low flow areas near large rock outcroppings or fallen trees.
