fly fishing fly tying ? Problem with hooks?
Hi I am relatively new to fly tying but I love it. I want to tie a black beetle and I am buying all the materials off www.essentialfly.com but I do not know what make or size or type of hook to use as there are so many also there are loads of different answers on the internet so I can’t work it out can someone have a look on the website and tell me which one I should be using. Thank you very much ![]()
Sorry the site is wrong it is really called www.theessentialfly.com

Best way to answer your question regarding hooks would be as follows; You are either going to be fishing your fly on top of the water (dry fly) in which case you would want to buy hooks considered “fine wire” (thin). These hooks are very light and assist in the fly floating rather than sinking. These hooks are also offered in a “long shank” version for longer flies like wooly worms, etc. Or, if you plan on having your offering sink, buy heavier wire hooks, also offered in long shank. As a beginner, it will be much easier for you to tie on the longer shank hooks to begin with. I checked out the site and found it difficult to pinpoint these hooks. They are mainly called Mustad hooks and I was unable to get them on photo plates for ID purposes. As in “2x, 3x, 4x long, etc. For the long shanks. Hope this will help you and suggest you research some other fly tying material sites.
