Your Questions About Fly Fishing Bait Fish Patterns

Robert asks…

Question about fishing with dry flies?

I’ve been fishing the same lake for a couple weeks now and have noticed some patterns in the behavior of the rainbow trout in there.

Before the sun comes up, the fish are quite active, near the surface, and eating a lot of flies/bugs off the surface. During this time, worms on an 18-inch leader from the swivel and bobber work well, and I get nibbles/bites often. But as soon as the sun comes up, it’s like the fish abandon any kind of food except stuff on the surface. The number of fish jumping for bugs explodes, and they basically start ignoring worms.

I don’t own a fly fishing rod, and I’m not really interested in getting one. I do have a few small dry flies though, and I was wondering if there was a way to use them with a standard fishing pole? The idea is that I think dry flies floating on the surface would be a really popular bait for the trout feeding on bugs.

Joy answers:

Take your six foot light action spinning rod and load the reel with six pound line. Then take a clear casting bubble and fill it half way with water and slide it up your main line. Cut off about three or four feet of your main line and set it aside. Tie on a barrel swivel just big enough to keep the float from sliding up over it. Tie the main line “leader material” to the other ring of the barrel swivel. Tie one of your dry flies to the end of the leader.

Cast it out and retrieve with gentle twitches of the rod tip. This works with wet flies also, if you’re interested.
