Chris asks…
Unusual antique box?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
At a car boot sale last week i bought a small box for £1. It has carving on the top and bottom edges but is otherwise unadorned. After stripping away the layers of dirt, paint and varnish it appears to be made of mahogany. It has a simple catch (no lock) and two mysterious holes: one the size of decimal-era half-penny and another larger hole (approx 6in wide and 1in deep) on the other side (rather crudely cut, possibly so the owner could carry it around when it was used to store fish-tackle)
What do you think the box’s original purpose was? A humidor? A tea caddy? A moneybox? And how old is it?
Joy answers:
Nick, it is almost impossible to tell you what the box’s original prupose was, or even what it could be, without actually seeing a picture of the box. Perhaps if you had posted a link to a photo of the box, then we would have most probably been able to help.
